"I had experienced some ongoing hearing issues and then started having some dizziness that I felt needed investigating. The gp wasn't overly concerned but while I was there I mentioned I could get it checked at the audiologist through my AA membership.

I managed to get a short notice appointment at Bay Audiology and unfortunately it showed significant hearing loss in one ear. The audiologist promptly wrote up a report saying I needed an urgent referral to a specialist, so within a couple of days I was back at the gp and had that done. An MRI revealed I had a benign brain tumour on my hearing and balance nerve, called a Vestibular Schwannoma (also known as Acoustic Neuroma).

My wonderful surgeons were able to remove the whole tumour and whilst I've lost my hearing in one ear permanently, I haven't had any long term damage to my facial nerve and have mostly decent balance.

I'm grateful with the help of AA and Bay Audiology it was discovered when it was, without needing to become more symptomatic first or grown more and caused further damage."

• Free hearing check is available to AA Members aged 15 years and over (AA Members aged under 15 years require different, specialised paediatric hearing care, ask your GP for more information).
• Limit one free full diagnostic hearing consultation only per year per AA Member.
• Other appointment types are excluded from the offer, including but not limited to hearing aid reviews, tinnitus consultations, paediatric appointments, ear wax removal, and other specialised appointments.
